SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) is a non-profit organization operating in 44 countries at over 1400 universities with more than 34,000 student team members. Their mission: to bring students together with academic and business leaders to engage in projects that use the positive power of business to improve lives worldwide.

Like many studios we have interns that pass through, spending a few weeks to a few months, depending on their schedules. Agnes Prammer was a recent visitor with a different story. For one thing, she came from Austria. For another thing, she had an insatiable appetite for the wet plate collodion process. For those unfamiliar with the process, to describe it as labor intensive is a delicate way of saying it can be a temperamental pain in the ass, especially for one who is learning the craft. But learn it she did and in a remarkably short period of time; taking home with her a beautiful body of work. The day before she left I had her stand in front of my camera and took a series of portraits that became the basis for this video I call “Agnes’ Dream”. - Scott Ferguson

For the past three years, Scott Ferguson has traveled to Nicaragua as a member of an ecumenical mission group working in El Samaritan. It was established a number of years ago by Nor and Caroline Syrker upon their return to Managua after years of exile in the United States during the Sandanista rule. Their primary efforts are focused on youth education and they currently fund three schools in Managua. Also, as a doctor, Nor is committed to improving the health care of the people. They have established a clinic on their property and are close to finishing a surgical unit.
The poverty in Nicaragua is numbing and as deplorable poverty is anywhere, it is especially devastating in a land where there is absolutely no safety net. The work goal is to provide, in a very small way, whatever is needed at the time of the trip; whether it is painting a school, building a wall, hauling materials. The mission goal of the trip is to be a witness to the people we see and visit, whether they are in the neighborhoods, in the schools, on the street, or in the hospitals. Despite the history of American involvement in the region, the people are wonderful to us, very open and in spite of their conditions, almost always have a smile.

Scott Ferguson's ironic since of humor spawned this personal project titled Santa's Day Off. The image below of Santa doing his laundry was selected for the 2006 Communication Art Photo Annual.
